The Nervous System

The loom where the Circle and the Line are woven — and the instrument every practice on this site is tuning.

The Loom

Beneath every symbol you read and every step you dance, one system is doing the reading and the dancing: your nervous system. It has two great gestures, and you already know them from the founding myth. The settling branch — rest, digestion, return, repair — is the Circle: the body coming home. The activating branch — alertness, effort, direction, response — is the Line: the body going somewhere.

Health is not one or the other. Health is the weave: a nervous system that can rise fully to meet the moment and then genuinely return — reach and rest, activate and settle, Line and Circle, all day long. What gets called "regulation" is simply weaving that has become fluent.

The myth is not a metaphor here.
It is anatomy.

The Two Shadows, in the Body

The Loop

Circle Unbroken

Shutdown, numbness, the freeze — a body that returns and returns and cannot rise to meet its life

The Race

Line Unsoftened

Bracing, vigilance, the grip — a body that reaches and reaches and has forgotten the way home

Most of us live leaning toward one shadow. Neither is a failing — each began as protection. The work is not to judge the pattern but to feel it clearly, because a pattern felt clearly begins to change on its own.

How the Practices Tend It

Everything on this site is, at the level of the body, nervous-system practice. Soma Flow trains the weave in motion — feel, work, flow — teaching effort and ease to travel together. The breath practices work the loom directly: breath is the one thread of the weave you can take in hand at will. Reiki offers the deep Circle — the settle most bodies rarely reach alone. And the reading arts calm the system's oldest fear, which is meaninglessness: a life that makes sense is a life the body can finally rest inside.

You cannot think your way
into a settled body.
You can only practice your way there.
