The Grammar
of the Sky
How the symbolic language is constructed.
Astrology as a symbolic syntax rather than a dictionary of meanings. The sky supplies the structure. The human supplies the lived meaning.
This does not begin with Mars means anger, or Saturn means hardship, or Scorpio means intensity. It begins with astronomical position and geometric relationship, and translates those measurements into a constrained symbolic grammar.
sky → measurement → geometry → symbolic grammar → human recognition
Interpretation comes last.
How to read this page. Where this lexicon and the working calculator disagree, the page says so rather than quietly picking a side. Each planet shows its semantic range and the single verb the calculator currently uses; two of them sit outside their range. Three aspects are listed here but have no derived word in the instrument, and are tagged as such. Those are open questions, not settled ones. The calculator is The Grammar of the Sky.
IThe layers
| Layer | Function | Question |
|---|---|---|
| Planet / body | function, as a verb | What is acting? |
| Element | medium, capacity | Through what medium? |
| Mode | behaviour of the medium | How does that medium move? |
| Sign | element × mode | What form does the action take? |
| Aspect | relationship, operator | How do the actions interact? |
| Dispositor | handoff | Where does the action pass next? |
| House | field of experience | Where is it occurring? |
| Temporal movement | tense | Where is the relationship in its cycle? |
| The human being | receiver, participant | How, if at all, is this being lived? |
The two columns are the same words. Mine is adjective plus noun; the calculator sets both halves as gerunds, because this grammar treats these as functions rather than things. Nothing is added and nothing is borrowed from the planet layer — which is where the previous twelve went wrong: action was Mars’s word, structure Saturn’s, dissolving Neptune’s, redistributing Pluto’s. Five planet words had been pulled down into the element layer, which is the one direction this grammar forbids. Where two mode words are given, the calculator uses the first and the other is noted.
function → through medium × mode → relationship → function → in a field → through time
A symbolic statement can be constructed before any psychological interpretation. The human encounter comes afterward.
IIPlanetary functions
What is acting?
Planets are treated as verbs — functions occurring within the system, not fixed personality traits. These are semantic ranges, not interchangeable predictions.
| Body | Semantic range | In the calculator |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | illuminate · center · reveal · vitalize | illuminates |
| Moon | receive · regulate · remember · respond | receives |
| Mercury | distinguish · translate · connect · articulate · name | names |
| Venus | value · attract · relate · harmonize · draw | draws |
| Mars | act · initiate · separate · pursue | acts |
| Jupiter | expand · contextualize · amplify · seek meaning | expands |
| Saturn | structure · contain · limit · commit | structures |
| Uranus | liberate · disrupt · awaken · repattern | disrupts |
| Neptune | dissolve · permeate · imagine · surrender | dissolves |
| Pluto | expose · transform · compost · redistribute power | exposes |
| Chiron | sensitize · reveal vulnerability · integrate | — † |
| North Node | orient · indicate direction · draw attention forward | — † |
The whole range is on the page. The calculator shows the word it used
and the set it came from, so the one word is a choice rather than a verdict — and the set is
this one, read from this table. Name and draw, in italics above, were
added to Mercury’s and Venus’s ranges rather than swapped for articulate
and attract. Nothing was taken away to make the instrument agree with the lexicon.
The reader chooses, from this table only. The calculator shows the word it
used and the rest of the range beside it, and any of them can be tapped to recompose the
sentence with that word instead. What it will not accept is a word that is not here —
the same rule the instrument obeys. A reader gains the choice between the words I wrote;
nobody gains the power to add one. The plain-language line steps aside when a different
verb is chosen, because that line was written for the default word and would otherwise
describe the wrong one.
A range, not a gradient. The order carries no direction. A gradient would have
a far end, and a far end is a valence — which is the one thing the calculator cannot compute,
because not one of the eleven measured quantities it reads is signed. These are equal doors,
not a slope with a bottom.
† Chiron and the North Node have ranges here and no verb in the calculator, which
composes no sentence for them and says so.
IIIElements
Through what kind of medium is this action occurring?
| Element | Functions | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Fire | activate · radiate · animate | Something moves outward, becomes energized, illuminates, generates movement. |
| Earth | embody · materialize · ground | Something takes form, acquires weight, becomes tangible, enters material conditions. |
| Air | connect · exchange · differentiate | Something moves between positions, differentiates, relates information, establishes networks. |
| Water | receive · carry · permeate | Something receives, contains, permeates, transmits through contact, remembers. |
Not personality adjectives. Fire is not automatically passionate. Earth is not automatically practical. Air is not automatically intellectual. Water is not automatically emotional. Those are possible human expressions. The symbolic layer stays closer to function.
IVModes
How does the medium behave?
| Mode | Functions | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Cardinal | initiate · enter · set in motion · direct | Begins movement. |
| Fixed | hold · sustain · concentrate · stabilize | Maintains movement or form; deepens what has entered the field. |
| Mutable | adapt · distribute · translate · transition | Changes the distribution of movement; prepares one state to become another. |
Also not personality. Cardinal does not necessarily mean ambitious. Fixed does not necessarily mean stubborn. Mutable does not necessarily mean inconsistent.
VSigns as element × mode
A sign is not an independent container of traits. It is an element–mode coordinate, and the construction is deliberately mechanical.
| Sign | Element | Mode | Construction | In the calculator |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Fire | Cardinal | initiating activation | initiating and activating |
| Taurus | Earth | Fixed | sustained embodiment | sustaining and embodying |
| Gemini | Air | Mutable | adaptive / distributed connection | adapting and connecting (or distributing) |
| Cancer | Water | Cardinal | initiating reception | initiating and receiving |
| Leo | Fire | Fixed | sustained activation | sustaining and activating |
| Virgo | Earth | Mutable | adaptive embodiment | adapting and embodying |
| Libra | Air | Cardinal | initiating connection | initiating and connecting |
| Scorpio | Water | Fixed | sustained / concentrated reception | sustaining and receiving (or concentrating) |
| Sagittarius | Fire | Mutable | distributed activation | distributing and activating |
| Capricorn | Earth | Cardinal | initiating materialization | initiating and materializing |
| Aquarius | Air | Fixed | sustained connection | sustaining and connecting |
| Pisces | Water | Mutable | adaptive / distributed reception | adapting and receiving (or distributing) |
Traditional sign symbolism can enrich interpretation later. It should not overwrite the architecture underneath.
VIAspect grammar
How do two functions encounter one another?
Aspects are relational operators. The geometry does not say whether the relationship is good or bad.
| Geometry | Symbolic action | In the calculator |
|---|---|---|
| Conjunction 0° | join · concentrate · occupy one field | joins |
| Sextile 60° | open · exchange · make a pathway available | opens toward |
| Square 90° | turn · encounter another vector · redirect | turns |
| Trine 120° | flow · carry · transmit | carries |
| Opposition 180° | face · behold · differentiate | faces |
| Quincunx 150° | adjust · reorient | not in the instrument |
| Quintile 72° | make · craft · arrange · invent | no derived word |
| Biquintile 144° | synthesize · elaborate · inventive patterning | no derived word |
The sextile now says what you wrote. It used connects,
which was not in the range beside it — and which was also the canonical word for the
Air element, so one word was doing two jobs in two different layers. It now says
opens toward, which is the wording section XI already uses: acting →
opens toward → repatterning.
On the three without a word. The five the instrument uses are the angles
that both land on whole signs and close a figure whose corners share something — the
trine’s three points are all one element, the square’s four all one mode. 72° is 2.4
signs, so it lands mid-sign and closes onto nothing shared. 144° likewise. And 150°
does land on whole signs — five of them — but five shares no element (5 mod 4 = 1),
no mode (5 mod 3 = 2) and no polarity (5 mod 2 = 1). It is the same reason 30° was left
out. All three are real angles and the lexicon names them; the instrument has no
derivation for them and composes no sentence rather than borrowing one.
A square is not inherently negative. A trine is not inherently beneficial. An opposition is not automatically conflict.
Mars opposite Pluto does not begin as power struggle. It begins as:
Mars acts. Opposition faces. Pluto exposes.
Therefore:
Acting faces exposing.
Human interpretation follows. It is not supplied here.
VIITemporal movement
Where are we in the life of this geometry?
| State | Function |
|---|---|
| Beginning | the relationship enters the defined orb |
| Applying | the geometry moves toward exactitude |
| Exact | the relationship reaches its target angle |
| Separating | exactitude has passed and the bodies move apart |
| Returning | the geometry forms again, often through retrograde movement |
| Enduring | the relationship persists long enough to become background |
Orb alone does not describe temporal movement. A one-degree applying aspect and a one-degree separating aspect sit at the same distance and are different moments in the relationship. Tense changes the sentence without changing the grammar.
VIIIDispositor — the handoff
Where does this action hand itself off?
If a planet occupies a sign ruled by another planet, its action enters a relationship with the function governing that ground. Follow the handoffs and you are following a route.
Rulership is generated rather than inherited. The Sun takes Leo and the Moon takes Cancer; the remaining five are then laid outward from that axis in both directions in order of decreasing apparent speed — Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn. Twelve signs, seven bodies, and the familiar table falls out of the walk. Nothing is typed in by hand.
Every chain ends in a loop, always. Each planet has exactly one dispositor, so there is exactly one arrow out of each body; on a finite set, following one arrow per body must repeat. A planet in its own sign is a loop of one. Mutual reception is a loop of two. There is no third kind of ending and no chain that simply stops — so the question is never whether there is a circuit, but how long it is and how much feeds in.
Where to enter the loop
A loop has no first term. Sun → Venus → Mars → Sun and Mars → Sun → Venus → Mars are the same circuit written from different places, and nothing in the arithmetic prefers either. So naming a starting point is a choice, and a choice has to be derived rather than assumed.
The day supplies it. Rank the seven by apparent speed, slowest first — Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon — and give each hour of the day the next one in that repeating cycle. Twenty-four hours divided among seven leaves three, so every new day begins three places further along. Step three at a time through seven and the week we already use comes out, closing exactly:
| Day | Ruler |
|---|---|
| Saturday | Saturn |
| Sunday | Sun |
| Monday | Moon |
| Tuesday | Mars |
| Wednesday | Mercury |
| Thursday | Jupiter |
| Friday | Venus |
This is the most accessible piece of the whole system, because nobody has to be taught it — it is already inside the words. Mardi. Martes. Tiw's day. And it comes out of the same speed order that generates the rulerships, so the entry point is derived from the structure rather than imported into it. Only the classical seven have days; Uranus, Neptune and Pluto were found long after the scheme was full.
Tuesday, 6 October 2026 — Mars's day. So the walk starts at Mars:
Mars in Leo → Sun. Sun in Libra → Venus. Venus in Scorpio → Mars.
Closed, and Mars is in it, so the day's ruler is the entry. The other four all feed in — Moon and Jupiter in Leo hand to the Sun, Mercury in Scorpio and Saturn in Aries hand to Mars. All seven route into one loop of three.
As a sentence: acting hands to illuminating, illuminating hands to drawing, drawing hands to acting.
When the day's ruler is not in the loop it still reaches one, because every chain does. The walk then shows a channel into the circuit rather than a place on it — Saturday 3 January 2026 opens Saturn → Jupiter → Moon ↻, where structuring reaches the loop in two steps and the loop is the Moon closing on itself. Either way the walk begins where the calendar begins it.
The signal is read from it too
If the circuit opens at the day’s ruler and the sentence is then about two other bodies, the page has two protagonists. So among the configurations within orb, the calculator prefers one containing that day’s ruler, and turns the pair round so the ruler leads. Measured over 1,095 days: the ruler is available on 68.5% of days, and preferring it changes which pair is foreground on 51.3% of them.
On the days it is in nothing within orb, the page names the body that stood in for it rather than changing subject without a word. Monday never qualifies, because the Moon is out of the geometry altogether — and Monday gets its own sentence saying so, since "in nothing within orb" would imply it had a chance to lead.
By weekday, the ruler leads on: Wednesday 85%, Tuesday 83%, Saturday 82%, Friday 81%, Sunday 76%, Thursday 73%, Monday 0%. Mercury, Mars and Venus move fast and come into orb constantly; Jupiter is slow, so Thursday fails more often.
Measured, every second day from 1900 to 2100. The day's ruler is already inside the loop on 37.7% of days; on the other 62.3% it feeds in through a channel of one to six steps — a single step 34.4% of the time, two steps 17.9%, and five or more under half a percent. The loop it reaches is a single body 48.2% of the time, two bodies 29.2%, three 15.1%, four 5.6%, five 1.7%, six 0.2%, and all seven never. Just under half the time — 49.8% — every one of the seven routes into that same loop.
IXHouse — field of experience
Where is this occurring?
A house is not the action. The planet acts; the sign gives its element–mode expression; the aspect gives its relationship; the house is the field in which a person may encounter it. Houses stay downstream of the astronomy and the grammar rather than deciding in advance what a configuration means.
XThe human being
The human is not the passive object at the end of an astrological command. The human is the receiver and participant.
The system does not say this will happen to you. It asks do you recognize this pattern? The distinction is the whole thing.
the geometry belongs to the sky
the grammar belongs to the
instrument
the lived meaning belongs to the person
The week as a sequence
The order of the days is derived. It falls out of the speed order, closes exactly, and section VIII shows the walk. What the order means is not derived. The reading below is mine, and it belongs in this layer rather than in the measurement.
| Day | Ruler | Stage |
|---|---|---|
| Sunday | Sun | we receive |
| Monday | Moon | we reflect |
| Tuesday | Mars | we take action |
| Wednesday | Mercury | we translate it |
| Thursday | Jupiter | we expand it |
| Friday | Venus | we value it |
| Saturday | Saturn | we make it stable |
This is how matter happens. The movement is already there. The language helps us orient inside it.
Monday is Earth's day. We reflect, we rest, and we notice what we are carrying forward. The Moon is the one body that makes no aspects here — it sets the tone instead, every day, and Monday is the day that tone is the whole of it.
Two things worth being exact about.
Six of the seven stages sit inside that body's own range in section II — reflect,
translate, expand and value are the literal words, and
make stable and take action are the plain form of consolidate and
move. Sunday is the exception: receive is the Moon's word, and the Sun's range
has nothing like it. That is deliberate rather than an error. The Sun illuminates; what we do is
receive the illumination. Every stage here is in the first person, because the stage is
the human's and not the body's.
And the order is not a gradient. Of the six ways to walk the seven speeds by a constant
step, the week uses the one that holds consecutive days furthest apart in tempo — every
neighbouring pair is three ranks apart, which is the largest gap a seven-cycle allows. In speed
rank the week runs 0, 3, 6, 2, 5, 1, 4: slowest, middle, fastest, slow, fast, slow, middle. It
does not climb from slow to fast. It changes gear every day, by construction.
A valid response is always: nothing. If every human experience can be made to fit the grammar, the system has stopped discriminating and become a meaning generator. That applies to the sequence above as much as to anything else here.
XIBuilding a sentence
The smallest useful unit is body → aspect → body.
Mars → sextile → Uranus
becomes
acting → opens toward → repatterning
Element and mode then modify each action. Temporal movement sets the tense. House sets the field. Dispositor sets the handoff. Only then does human language begin.
measurement → geometry → function → element → mode → relationship → tense → handoff and field → human recognition
No lower layer may be smuggled upward. A bodily interpretation cannot become an astronomical measurement. A psychological interpretation cannot become geometry. A traditional meaning cannot override what the geometry actually says.
XIICircuits — working hypothesis
A single aspect creates a relationship. Several connected relationships may create a circuit: a closed route through which symbolic functions can be read as a sequence.
The dispositor chain in section VIII is the clearest case, because it closes by arithmetic rather than by appearance. A visually compelling configuration does not establish direction, causality, psychological meaning, or metaphysical significance. Those have to be investigated rather than assumed.
XIIIChannels — open question
A channel may eventually describe the route through a circuit that is actively carrying something at a particular time.
natal geometry = wiring
transit geometry = activation
circuit
= connected structure
channel = active route through it
This language is provisional and should not become canonical until repeated observation shows the distinction adds discrimination rather than an attractive metaphor.
XIVRecurrence
Patterns are verbs rather than things. A pattern is not an object someone possesses; it is something that keeps happening.
So the question is not only what does this configuration mean, but: what is happening again, and is participation changing?
XVThe interpretive boundary
| Level | Question |
|---|---|
| 1 · Observation | Where are the bodies? |
| 2 · Geometry | What relationships exist between them? |
| 3 · Symbolic translation | What does the constrained lexicon allow us to say? |
| 4 · Human interpretation | What, if anything, does a person recognize in lived experience? |
Hypotheses about psyche, archetype, recurrence, myth, synchronicity or cosmology may all be explored here. They should remain identifiable as hypotheses. Symbolic correspondence does not demonstrate physical causation.
The Orientation · today’s geometry, passed through this grammar
The sky supplies the syntax.
The human supplies the lived sentence.
